The rain that batters our roofs present no challenge to us, and yet for the homeless its easily one of the most crippling obstacles for them to get through every single night. We sleep in our nice beds and cuddle in our blankets while the homeless fight for warmth in their paper-thin tents. What many of us are forgetting is that while we selfishly envelop ourselves in this happiness, there are people on the streets with no homes, no families, and no one to care for them. However this morning I realized that our perception of this time of the year is so ridiculously skewed. We invest so much time and money into making our homes look nice, we reward ourselves with gifts for a year’s worth of hard work, and others for their friendship and kindness. It’s almost as if December is the best time for all of us to literally bask in how privileged we are. We’ve become so obsessed with this holiday the lights, the presents, sipping hot chocolate, being with loved ones. We’re still blessed with clear skies every once in a while, but mornings are cold and the rain likes to make guest appearances.īut not only do we associate December with cold weather, in the end we’re all thinking about one thing: Christmas. I’m sure all of us here in Socal have noticed the change in weather. Also, my efforts to go back to church have kept me occupied during Sunday mornings, which is when I found it most convenient to visit Skid Row. A full-time job, running my own business, and keeping in touch with friends has been challenging to say the least. Its been nearly one year since the last time I’ve made a visit to Skid Row.
